Hotel staff find live alligator left behind in room after owner 'loses him'

Wally, a three-feet alligator, was found making himself comfortable under a bed at a hotel room in Michigan by shocked staff after he had been left behind by a guest
Hotel staff were shocked to find an uninvited alligator staying in one of their rooms after he was left behind by a guest.

Wally, a three-feet reptile, was found relaxing under a bed and camouflaged with the carpet design at the Pine River Motel in Cheboygan, Michigan. The owner, who is a collector of exotic animals, had checked out having thought he had lost the alligator.

Gary Bates, the manager of the motel, said it was his nephew who discovered Wally in the room but he added that the alligator was very friendly.

“We just went in to clean the room and, when my nephew looked under the bed, Wally was there,” reportedly said motel manager Gary. “He was a real friendly gator, so I didn’t feel real scared. He let the police officers hold him and all that, I mean, it was a real friendly alligator.”

He told local radio that rather than biting, Wally did hiss to show he was unhappy. “He didn’t try biting anybody or anything. But … he hissed at me, and that was probably pretty much to say, leave me alone,” he said.

After the hotel staff found Wally they called police and the guest. “911 thought I was pulling a prank call on ‘em because I didn’t know what to do,” said Gary. Apparently the owner, who takes the alligator to schools, had assumed he had escaped into the wild and he had lost him.

“He thought it got out. He looked for him, couldn’t find it,” he told told the Detroit Free Press. “You couldn’t really miss it. It’s about three feet long. But it was a dwarf gator. It won’t get no bigger than that.”

Wally was returned to his owner last Friday. “Staff at the Pine River Motel were very cooperative and advised Wally could stay in the room until the owner arrived to pick him up,” the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s office said in a press release. According to the sheriff, no charges have been filed and no fines were levied — except a fee for the extra night Wally had at the Pine River Inn.

But in South Carolina there was a sad outcome after an alligator was killed. Several dozen people gathered last Saturday at an apartment complex along the coast to remember a longtime resident who died the day before – an alligator named Walter who sunned beside a pond on the property for more than a decade.

Walter was killed on the property after several complaints over the past week, the management of Daniel Island Village told WCIV-TV in a statement. Neighbours in the apartment complex near Charleston said Walter had been hanging around the complex for more than a decade, not only earning a name but a little fame.

Vigil organizer Rebekah Cole told the TV station that people with pets and children could walk right past Walter and not be bothered. “He was a piece of the community. Even though he was a cold-blooded animal, we all loved him and it tore us all up,” Ms Cole said.

In a February 2024 Facebook post, Daniel Island Village marked warmer weather after the winter chill with a photo of the alligator hanging out by a pond. “Daylight savings time is coming to an end! It is getting warmer out! Daniel Island Village is on the verge of a beautiful blossom! The proof is in the pudding, WALTER is OUT!!” the post read.
